California Proposition 65 notice

California’s Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify consumers about exposure to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. One such chemical, alcohol, is present in the beverages sold on this site.

What the warning means

The listing of a substance under Proposition 65 is a statutory disclosure requirement. It is not a finding by the state that a particular product is unsafe, and it does not set a safe or unsafe level for any individual bottle. Alcoholic beverages sold in California carry this notice as a matter of routine compliance.

Substances in alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic beverages may contain, or may produce in the body, substances that appear on the Proposition 65 list. Fermentation and distillation can also produce trace compounds such as acetaldehyde, and some products contain added ingredients that carry their own listing. The notice covers exposure associated with the product as sold.

Reducing exposure

Exposure to any substance in an alcoholic beverage is reduced by drinking less, drinking less often, and following the federal warning on the label. Nothing on this page should be read as a health claim or as advice about the effects of any product.

If you are pregnant

Federal guidance is unambiguous: women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. If you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, do not drink alcohol.
